Additional Research

River Bank Stabilization Study

Prepared by J.F. New & Associates Inc. The study concluded that the White River has severely eroded banks along 100 Acres. Solutions are being considered pending results of other research.

Wetland Delineation Report

Prepared by J.F. New & Associates Inc. Based on criteria established by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, one contiguous emergent/scrub-shrub wetland (0.34 acres) and two isolated forest wetlands (1.08 acres and 0.30 acres) were identified within the site boundary. The report was submitted to the Corps of Engineers and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Vegetation Survey

Conducted by Rebecca Dolan, Ph.D., Director of the Freisner Herbarium of Butler University, and her associate Marcia Moore. A total of 187 species were recorded. No federal- or state- listed rare plants were seen. Sixty-six non-native species were recorded, comprising 36% of the flora. Of these, 11 (6%) are considered invasive exotics.

Geomorphic and Hydrologic Assessment

Recommendations by Greg A. Olyphant, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Geological Sciences, Indiana University, Bloomington, include making engineering adjustments to the existing levee aimed at alleviating the deleterious effects of the inevitable floods. Depth of flooding would be decreased by routing part of major flood flows through the flood plain behind the existing levee. This action would also have the additional benefits of improved hydrology and water quality of the pond and a rejuvenated riparian wetland on the site.
