Introduction
The artist Adrian Schiess has been exhibiting his trademark "flat" paintings internationally since 1987. These large aluminum panels are rendered in enamel or digital prints covered with lacquer. The paintings are not conventionally hung on the wall. Rather, the artist places the works on the floor or upright against a wall. Their glossy surfaces are intended to reflect the passage of time, light, and people in the environment. For his project at the IMA, Schiess created a site-sensitive exhibition throughout the entire campus, using an arrangement of the flat panels and other multi-media devices.
