Magdalene Odundo’s forms are inspired by a diverse range of influences including ancient Roman, Native American and Chinese pottery. This particular vessel is inspired by the appearance of Mangbetu women of Central Africa. In the past, Mangbetu women elongated their heads by binding them and added extraordinary headpieces. The flaring lip of Odundo’s vessel echoes the traditional Mangbetu pot to the left that actually depicts the female’s head.
