Whistler's view of the old Adam and Eve pub overlooking the Thames was one of dozens of etchings Whistler made in the neighborhood of Chelsea after moving to that London suburb in 1863.

"As Whistler grew older and practiced more, he gave up his literal, definite, firm method of work. Instead of drawing the panes of a window in firm outlines, he suggested them by drawing shadows and the reflected light with short crisp strokes, and scarcely any outline at all."
-Joseph Pennell, 1909
