In this sculpture, the artist Yoshio Taylor refers to a famous Japanese ghost story in which a monk covers his body with sacred scripture to avoid possession by evil spirits. Taylor frequently makes nocturnal references, reflecting his preference for working late into the night, "when the subconscious comes through and you get interesting and inspiring images rushing through your head."

For the ghostly tale, search the Mount Royal College "gaslight etext" website for "The Story of Mimi-nashi-Hōichi" in Kwaidan: Stories of Strange Things by Lafcadio Hearn. [http://gaslight.mtroyal.ab.ca/ gaslight/]
