As an official war artist, Nevinson was able to go up in planes and recorded, perhaps for the first time by an artist, the world as seen from a maneuvering Sopwith Camel at 4,000 feet.

"In all modesty I still think my aeroplane pictures are the finest work I have done. The whole newness of vision and the excitement of it, infected my work and gave it an enthusiasm which can be felt."
-C.R.W. Nevinson
"The curious sensation of the man back of the pilot, of being motionless while the torque of the propeller in front is mad with motion and the flat checker-board of the earth swiftly comes and goes."
-Christian Brinton, 1919
