Turner 's use of finely-grained aquatint in place of the toothier mezzotint to tone the sky in Calm was appropriate to achieve the "golden colour of ambient vapour," which he admired in the 17th-century paintings of Aelbert Cuyp.
"Turner painted several pictures in imitation of [the Dutch masters]; and those in which he tried to rival Cuyp are healthy and noble works, being in fact just what most of Cuyps's pictures are-faithful studies of Dutch boats in calm weather on smooth water." -John Ruskin, 1856
