Mama masks, such as this one, depict bush cows or other horned animals, and are among the more simplified representations of animal headpieces in Africa. These maskers take part in funeral and farming ceremonies and incorporate ancestor spirits or other supernatural forces. Sacrificial materials, including feathers, are added to the top of these masks before each performance.
