Elaborately designed kimono-shaped comforters were often part of the bride's trousseau and were included with a number of kimonos given to her by her family.

A large phoenix, an auspicious bird associated with the empress in both China and Japan, is depicted here, along with a blossoming Paulownia tree.

The phoenix is also an emblem for the bride because of its beauty and virtues of sincerity, prosperity, and truthfulness-all qualities hoped for in marriage.
