Dior introduced his first line in 1947, which became known as the "New Look." This widely popular and decidedly feminine style emerged in Paris in the aftermath of WWII, when fabric rationing was lifted. The hour glass silhouette of the "New Look" emphasized rounded natural shoulders, slim waist and padded hips.

A tour de force of cut and construction, the extremely full skirt of this suit is made up of 18 large flared panels. While the waist measures only 26 inches, the circumference of the skirt's hem is an amazing 33 feet.

Acquired by Mrs. Carlos Maas (Roberta) of San Francisco.
Sold to a dealer in San Francisco.
Purchased by Beverley Birks probably in 2003.
