Influenced by traditional local wood carving, many Pont-Aven artists sculpted furniture and decorative panels. This relief adopts the popular Breton theme of families waving farewell to the seafaring fishermen.

Carving with a gouge before applying the color, Amiet cleverly extended the windswept figures and sailboats across the wide panel.

Amiet spent thirteen months in Pont-Aven and carried many of the artists' progressive ideas back to his native Switzerland.
