Between 1908 and 1918 clothing styles gradually changed to reflect the new century and new women. Waistlines were raised, and longer and straighter corsets replaced the S-shaped ones. The corset—almost reaching below the thighs—helped achieve tubular, slimmer silhouettes. These columnar sheath dresses were reminiscent of the fashion of the early 1800s. The hemlines rose in this period to reveal the ankles.
