Colorful zinnias adorn this dramatic evening dress. The hourglass shape is reinforced by a built-in boned corset. Yards of fabric were used to create the voluminous split bubble-skirt, similar to bloomers, which were inspired by Turkish “harem” pants.

Influenced by Dior and Balenciaga, Norell brought French couture standards of design, quality and craftsmanship to his American clientele. After working for Hattie Carnegie, in 1940 he joined Anthony Triana and launched one of the most successful fashion houses in the U.S.
