evening dress
This evening dress is a rare and important example of Patou's creations. It features the new silhouette that Patou introduced in 1928: a dropped hemline, which reached the toes, and a waistline that was returned to its normal position. This long and narrow silhouette has a strong sculptural form that was transformed by the movement of the wearer.
A tour-de-force of technical construction, it consists of 16 vertical black strips, highlighted by green inserts that are contoured to fit the body precisely. The green panels spread out at the hip to form gores, giving fullness and movement to the skirt. The structure and the combination of the bold colors accentuate the female form and streamline the style that became known as Art Deco.
A brilliant example of the glamour and luxury that was prevalent in Paris between the two world wars, this dress embodies the refinement, energy and pizzazz that defined the Art Deco movement.
