Chinese tree peonies embellish the surface of the elegant and luxurious fabric. This three-piece suit consists of a sheath dress and matching boxy jacket with three-quarter-length sleeves. This style became known as the “Carnegie Suit” and reigned supreme for fashionable daywear.

In the 1950s, the couture houses of Paris dictated fashion, but designers like Carnegie interpreted European styles for American customers. She was celebrated for her elegant and sophisticated renditions of the French models. Hattie Carnegie Originals were soon carried in stores throughout the U.S., as is the case with this outfit, purchased in Indianapolis at L.S. Ayres.
