While masks are extremely rare in Micronesia and Polynesia, several types are used in Melanesia. In the Lower Sepik River region, masks with long noses depict a variety of spiritual beings, while masks with shorter noses are ancestors. Many wooden masks show traces of a combination of European paint and colors made from natural materials found in New Guinea.
