Masks of the eastern Pende are characterized by the use of simplified forms and small geometric designs. Red, black and white coloring are typical features. Masks are thought to embody ancestral forces and serve as mediators with the spirit world. These carvings are used during important events such as the initiation of youths, the installation of chiefs, agricultural rituals and village relocations.
