Bwa masks depict animals which are part of family histories. The hook overhanging the round face is typical and may depict the beak of a hornbill, a magical bird associated with divination. The circular eyes refer to those of an owl, a symbol of magic power. The checkerboard pattern on the plank represents the separation of knowledge and ignorance, the initiated from uninitiated.
