The 70-foot fall of the River Tees is one of the grandest in England, though not as grand as Turner remembered it in painting this watercolor ten years after his first visit. This new rendition inaugurated his series Picturesque Views in England and Wales.

The miniscule figure of an artist sketching at the foot of the fall might well represent Turner himself.
