Among Akan peoples, small figures with flat heads, known as akuaba, are thought to ensure the birth of beautiful and healthy children. The figures are carried about by women and cared for as if they are children. After childbirth, an akuaba is retained by a mother as a remembrance and sometimes as a teaching device for girls. It may also be placed in a shrine.
