This figure portrays Mende ideals of femininity, including the shiny black surface, prominent breasts and buttocks, and elaborate hairstyle. The snake at the base may relate to the importance of serpents in Mende religion. This object may have been used as a medicine figure to heal the ill. It is also possible that this carving may have been a prestige object, without religious significance, displayed by an important individual.
