Mother and child figures, Phemba, symbolize human fertility and embody the continuity of life. A woman’s most important function was to produce children. Maternity images show a young, beautiful woman at the height of her reproductive powers. High status references include brass anklets and earrings, a distinct hairstyle, a chest band and bold scarification along the shoulders and below the neck.
