This figure may have been made to contain ancestral or other spiritual forces.  The figure wears bracelets signifying status, and feature zigzags, which may refer to snakes. The upright posture relates to recent woodcarving styles of Mali.  It has sharp, angular features, rather than rounded forms.  The jutting mouth and breasts, tube-like arms and pointed ears are more typical of wooden, rather than ceramic, figures.
