Impressive standing figures of both sexes are found in many Igbo areas. This carving honors a specific god. The figures are considered protective, and are usually kept as a group in a shrine and are cared for by a priest. The markings on the forehead, bracelets, and anklets depict wealthy and status. Beads, cloth, and other materials are commonly attached to the carving in their shrines.
