Bernard's print series emphasized the labors of everyday life in Pont-Aven, but he imposed his own sense of design upon each scene. Here Bernard uses the curving forms of the women and the diagonal placement of the tree to create a fluid, lively pattern. Especially clever is the pairing of the two women, stretching in opposite directions, at right.

The commanding but extremely flat figure at left was inspired by Japanese prints of actors. Even the sheets extended on the line enhance the flatness of Bernard's composition.
