Bernard hand-colored his Volpini prints, and each impression was handled differently. Here he treated the women's dresses with a thick blue wash that has the dry look of pastel. The brilliant color adds legibility, distinguishing the laborers from the mounds of hay around them. Similarly, the lighter blue applied to the roof makes the house on the left more distinct.

In a rather literal reference to the Bretons' close ties to nature, Bernard uses the same curving forms to define the women, the hay, the trees, and the cloud. His complex pattern could be read as an abstract image.
