Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides) is known for art which identifies a man's status within a men's association and society in general.  The impressive ancestral slit drums and figure on view here were displayed with other examples in a common village gathering space.  The large concave heads are characteristic of Vanuatu styles.

Multi-level men's associations are an important part of the leadership structure throughout Melanesia.  An individual advances through the levels by demonstrating leadership, accumulating valuable knowledge, sponsoring feasts and giving gifts.  Figures and head crests, which may honor spirits and legendary ancestors, are used to indicate a man's position within society.
