These photographs by Lucinda Devlin are each part of broader serial projects, in which the artist documents uninhabited architectural interiors. One piece shows a recreation destination from the Pleasure Grounds series, and another documents a spa from the project Corporal Arenas. Other images from those serial projects show motel rooms, discos, tanning booths and medical facilities. Two works are on view from the series The Omega Suites, for which Devlin photographed penitentiaries in twenty states. Each photograph represents the actual location described in its title.
Throughout her work, Devlin uses existing or non-theatrical lighting, and sets her Hasselblad camera at eye level, facing one wall in a room, with perpendicular walls along the sides of the frame. With these works, Devlin intends to show how the structures of particular spaces express the values of those cultures that create and use them.
