In 1806 Turner manifested his ambition to demonstrate the full range of possible landscapes through 100 engravings that he called the Liber Studiorum (Book of Studies).
The frontispiece lists the engravers with whom Turner worked and emblematically indicates the six categories of landscapes included in the series: vegetation for "Pastoral," oars for "Marine," a classical entablature for "Epic Pastoral" and an arcade for "Architectural." The framed painting of the myth of Europa and the Bull stands for two categories-"Historical" and "Mountainous."
