Helmet masks depicting horned animal heads are called Bonu Amuen or "gods of the bush." Such masks are strictly male in orientation and are danced with during funerals of important men and in ceremonies to discipline people and protect villages. Women are forbidden to observe these masquerades, which are associated with aggressiveness, violence and unpredictability.
