The mwana pwo mask represents Chokwe ideals of feminine beauty. The delicate features, elegant hairstyle and scarification marks indicate that this is a young female in the prime of life. The masking performance depicts the role of women in society and recalls the female ancestor who watches over the fertility of future generations. Dancers go from village to village and are paid for successful performances.
