The Liber Studiorum was wholly Turner's project. He conceived of it, designed the subjects, financed the production and personally marketed the prints, which were issued in fourteen supplements of five prints each until the project foundered after 1819.
For most subjects, Turner fashioned an etching on the copper printing plate that would serve as the underdrawing over which the engraver would add tones by means of mezzotinting.
The etchings of the "Architectural" subjects best exemplify the drafting skills Turner had learned in 1790 by working with architects.
