Leigh was known as the "Sagebrush Rembrandt" due to his use of traditional European techniques.  The dark tonalities in this work reflect his training at the Royal Academy in Munich.

The artist strongly disliked modern, abstract art.

Leigh focused on the culture and traditions of the Hopi and Navajo Indians.
