Like many other headpieces from the Cross River area of Nigeria, the wooded elements are covered with animal skin. Also, this example has human hair clippings affixed to the head. Unlike most African wooden figures, which are carved from one piece of wood, this figure is a composite with separately carved arms and legs.
This headpiece, belongs to a men’s association and was worn during funerals and other events. The appearance of this headpiece honored ancestors, upheld the power of elders, and maintained the social order.
Today the IMA is open 11 am to 9 pm. ADMISSION IS FREE.
