This canvas depicts the artist's brother, Georges Pissarro, working in the family studio outside Paris. From his father Camille's hat hanging on the wall to the ceramic planter on the table, the image is filled with details of the Pissarro family's life and work.

Lucien Pissarro, Camille's eldest son, introduced his father to Seurat in 1885, and they were among the first converts to the Neo- Impressionist movement.

The meticulous dotted brushwork, complex composition, and heavy use of complementary colors establish this interior as one of his most ambitious Neo-Impressionist efforts.
