Mythical scenes of love and revelry were common themes of Apulian (South Italian) vases, which were presented as offerings to the dead at their tombs. This lekanis, or offering dish, shows a woman’s head on one side and a winged genie on the other. Genies were believed to assist with funerary rites and with the transition to the afterworld.
