In 1894, Vollard acquired and reprinted the ten zinc plates upon which Gauguin had drawn mementos of his sojourns in Martinique, Arles and Brittany. Gauguin had issued the first edition himself on canary yellow paper in 1889, which had found no market.
Gauguin, before returning to Tahiti for a second time in 1895, sold all the paintings in his studio to Vollard, who would serve as the exclusive agent for Gauguin's future work.
