Although baskets originated as utilitarian containers, they have, since the 1800s become an important art form for sale to outsiders.

Most basket containers are made from a variety of interwoven plant materials such as grass, shrub branches and tree bark.

Basketry containers have been made by Native Americans for over 10,000 years.
