Sir Walter Scott had been convinced by his publisher that Turner's participation in the Provincial Antiquities would ensure financial success.  Turner, being fully engaged in 1818, suggested that he work up his 1801 sketches of Scotland that had included the required subject of Linlithgow.  Scott wrote a contract that gave Turner the financial incentive to make fresh sketches in Scotland.

"Turner's palm is as itchy  as his fingers are ingenious and he will, take my word for it, do nothing without cash and anything for it."
-Sir Walter Scott, 1819
