Turner's view is from Greenwich Park overlooking the Royal Naval Hospital and, far up the Thames, the skyline of London dominated by the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral caught in a sunburst.

Turner derived the composition from his recent painting that had just been acquired by his newest and most important patron, Walter Fawkes.

"We are attracted by the pleasant knolls and grassy slopes of the park in front, by the gleaming reaches of river beyond with white sails dotted all about, and by the fine rendering of the great city on the horizon, its very smoke made to enhance its beauty."
-W.G. Rawlinson, 1878
