Adrian Schiess has been exhibiting his trademark “flat” paintings since 1987. These large aluminum panels are rendered in enamel or as digital prints covered with lacquer. Schiess created this painting by incorporating a photograph that he took of his own studio floor. The paintings are not conventionally hung on the wall. Rather, the artist places the works on the floor or upright against a wall. The paintings’ glossy surfaces reflect the passage of time, light, and people, causing the works to appear ever-changing or, as the artist describes them, “in process.”
