Turner was sent north in 1794 with a commission to paint eight watercolors, including Matlock, which would be engraved in The Copper Plate Magazine.

Turner included the entire valley of the River Derwent from Matlock Bridge to the heights of the distant Tor in four-by-six inches, a size dictated by the engraving that would be made from it.
