Gilpin, a minister and amateur artist, had no talent for making "portraits" of landscapes, so he aimed to set down nature's broad effects during his tours of the wilder reaches of Britain.

Before drawing in ink, Gilpin prepared his paper with a sepia wash to provide a harmonizing golden glow similar to the much-admired effect of an Old Master landscape seen through its yellowed varnish.
