Turner habitually sketched a site from many angles rather than follow the common practice of fixing on the one spot that guidebooks of the day prescribed as the "best view."
This close-up of the ruined abbey was one of several drawn in the summer of 1791, from which the sixteen-year-old artist chose one to work up into a watercolor for the next year's Royal Academy exhibition.
