Alternating layers of horizontal and vertical brushstrokes, Rudolf de Crignis built up the surface of this painting with translucent washes of paint on top of a white gesso ground. While the dominant color is ultramarine blue, colors as various as phthalo turquoise, silver, and radiant lemon yellow were layered in its creation. De Crignis worked with the natural light in his studio to determine the specific hue and intensity of his blue and grey monochromatic works, which he would develop over the course of weeks and months. He described his practice as "[using] the art of painting to represent color as the transparent appearance of light."
