This small painting is considered the best of several copies of a lost self-portrait made by Frans Hals in the late 1640s. Hals was a renowned portraitist, greatly admired for his swift, spontaneous manner of painting and for the provocative vitality of his characterizations.
The existence of no fewer than fifteen copies of this painting reflects the great popularity of artist's self-portraits among 17th-century collectors.
