George Capel Coningsby, born Viscount Malden in 1757, had employed Turner in 1795 to paint five "portraits" of his remodeled estate, Hampton Court in Herefordshire.
The Viscount inherited the title 5th Earl of Essex in 1799 and with it the family estate at Cassiobury Park near Watford. He had it remodeled in 1805 in the Romantic-Gothic style and again employed Turner to chronicle the renovations in watercolor.
