A native of the Netherlands, Corneille was established as a portrait painter in the French city of Lyon by 1533. He was court painter to Queen Eleanor, then to the Dauphin (later Henri II).
Corneille de Lyon specialized in small, meticulously rendered portraits such as this one. The unknown man's proud bearing and cool gaze are sensitively characterized and delicately painted. The green background, typical of Corneille, enhances the sense of intimacy by concentrating attention on the sitter's face.
