Girtin was Turner's equal in patronage among collectors of landscape watercolors until his death at the age of twenty-seven in 1802.
Girtin was soon forgotten and in 1833, when Dr. Monro's estate sold the nearly three hundred copies of Cozens' drawings that Girtin and Turner had collaboratively produced between 1794 and 1797, they were all attributed solely to the well-known Turner.
