Type A is the collaboration of Adam Ames (b. 1969) and Andrew Bordwin (b. 1964), who have worked together since 1998. Employing a variety of media, Type A creates artworks that address issues of masculinity, competition and collaboration in contemporary society.
This photographic diptych belongs to Type A’s Push series, which includes video, drawings and photographs. To create this work, Ames and Bordwin took turns pushing each other while using a camera to document their subsequent falls against a plain black backdrop. By using short interval strobes with multiple exposures, they captured a sequence of bodily movements that echo the formative 19th-century motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge and Jules Marey.
Focusing on an action that is at once aggressive and reciprocal, Type A’s work intentionally blurs the lines between rivalry and cooperation. The result of their forceful pushing of one another is an ironically graceful arc of movement, as the two bodies move toward each other on either side of the diptych.
